The issue not only affects MathType equations, but Microsoft Equation editor 3.0 equations. It was caused by the security update for Microsoft Word (kb3178674). The only way to fix the problem is to uninstall the update. The issue has been reported to Microsoft and their product team is working on a fix.

Using Mathtype In Word
Math Builder is: after typing an equation you see immediately what it looks like. It's easy to get started: it's already built in to Microsoft Word. Common symbols have point-and-click icons.
