Installing Windows 95 in DOSBox, tips to achieve a successful install and how to navigate any problems that can come up.
So the good news. I got windows 95 to work. So far it is running pretty snappy and I am almost getting it to run a version of starcraft that I have. The bad news.
The video drivers for windows are not working properly. Did you guys have any luck with any specific driver for the retropie version of dosbox? I can't seem to get it to properly run in 256 color mode which is my last barrier to playing the old greats. My secret. I used my windows machine to make the disk file I followed the URL instructions below:Then I copied the win95 disk over to the pi and changed the dosbox config file to boot from disk C (the win95 disk I made). Awesome picture.People usually thrive for better, newer technology. Only in this forum here I see the exact opposite.

People going backwards, trying to run old software on their original, old hardware.I can understand the feeling of nostalgia and the memories connected to it but hell I wouldn't wanna play Monkey Island on an Amiga again (11 Floppy discs! I never liked that part of disc swapping and I could not afford 11 external floppy drives like my best friend at that time. So I am very happy that ScummVM took care of all this issues on a Windows 7 based system.Well, I guess as long you skip Windows Millennium and Windows Vista you're good. Quick edit: thank you edmaul69. That worked perfectly!ok guys. Hey Edmaul69,I had to install base drivers for the S3 (link in above post) because the Trio drivers that I had weren't being recognized by Win95 and when I loaded into the operating system it would force into 16 color, 640X480 which ruined the directx games. Do you have a link for the s3 virge or s3 savage drivers?
The daum version of dosbox can hardrun a graphics bios but I found that the command is not recognized by the raspberry pi version. When this is done I'm going to post a play by play so that future win95ers don't have to struggle as much. Thank you for the help good sir!
I've been working on this a bit myself, not physically yet, just kind of compiling what I think I'll need for it. If I can point you in the direction of some guys/gals who may be able to help.- Guessing you've found the DosBox forums already as that guide looks vaguely familiar. If you PM the user dada, he is currently compiling a new Win95 DosBox guide as I have contacted him a couple times. I think he may be able to provide assistance. The user Jorpho I would guess invented DosBox. Only reason I say so is that he/she responds to everything that is posted.I think I read something that said Win95 isn't officially supported by DosBox though, so not sure how much help they would offer.Cheers. I'll be keeping up and offering any help I can!
Method 1 'The Hard Drive Method' (Untested!):1. Make an image from your CD, It is important to make this into an IMG file, NOT an ISO.2. Type this in DOSBox:Imgmount D: CDROM.img -size XXX.XX Replace CDROM.img with the name of your image and replace XXX.XX with the size of the image. Also specify the folder you saved the image to.3. Start Windows 9x in DOSBox by typing this:Imgmount C: c.img -size 512,63,128,520 (assuming you have 2GB Image)Boot -l c: Specify the folder your Win9x image is in and Replace c.img with the name of your Win9x image.4. After you've started Windows 9x, Check My Computer for the D drive.5.

Note that the image of your CD-ROM will be recognized as a hard drive, That's OK, It's supposed to be recognized as a hard drive. Otherwise, It wouldn't be recognized at all.Enjoy Playing Old Win9x CD-ROM games!Method 2 'The IDE Method':Step 1: DownloadStep 2: Add this to your DOSBox.conf file:ide, primaryenable=trueide, secondaryenable=trueStep 3: Mount your CD-ROM in this syntax (no quotes): 'imgmount d: example.iso -t iso -fs iso -ide 2m' and then start Windows 95/98/Me.Method 3 'The Daemon Method' (The best method of all.):1.
Download Daemon Tools 3.47, an old version which supports Windows 95/98/Me. (OldApps.com is your friend)2.
Inject the Daemon Tools installer into the image.3. Start Windows inside DOSBox and launch the installer.4. After it's done installing, Shutdown Windows 9x, Make ISOs of all the games you want to play on Win9x in DOSBox and put the ISOs into a blank and formatted hard disk image(s).
(Tip: Do not delete the ISOs of your games after you've injected them inside the image, The physical CDs of the games can deteriorate overtime and eventually fail, becoming unreadable.)5. Start Windows inside DOSBox, Open Daemon Tools, open the menu, hover to 'Device 0 E: No media' and click 'Mount image'.6. In the Open dialog, navigate to your hard disk image containing the ISOs and select an ISO image to open.7. Enjoy your trip down memory lane!
For emulating Win9x, I'm using ykhwong's build but it should work with the official DOSBox builds (You have to install 98lite for Win98/WinMe and you have to use the VBE9x video drivers for official builds.) I booted my Win95 OSR2.5 image in official DOSBox and it says 'With USB support' on my W95 CD so I assume it's slipstreamed into Windows. It asked me to install IE4 but I used 'Close Program' to bypass IE4 setup, I do have IE3 installed though, When I booted the image in official DOSBox, DTools was not installed, I'm going to try and boot it later on, and will comment about it afterwards. You don't need my conf file, I just boot the image with 'imgmount c: c.img -size 512,63,128,520'. I have this command in my autoexec file in my copy of ykhwong's build.
(Just so you know, I have 3 separate copies of ykhwong's build that run Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me, respectively.). You use WinImage which has an inject feature which copies files you choose to the image. You also do not use an ISO, you copy the files from the ISO or CD to a blank IMG file large enough to fit all the files. You then mount the IMG with imgmount and DOSBox sees the drive as an emulated hard disk. I should note however that this method is theoretical and untested. Why I published an untested method? Let's just say I was a bit of a noob myself back then even though I had been using it since 2010.
(I didn't use it very often, for I was more interested in Virtual PC and Mac emulators such as Basilisk II and Sheepshaver.) I do apologize if this doesn't work. You could insert the files from the ISO into a folder within your Windows 95 image. There are 68k (1984-1994 era) Mac emulators for DOS but running them in DOSBox causes DOSBox to crash. However, Mini vMac (which comes in Mac 128k/512k (1984), Mac Plus (1986) and Mac II (1989) varieties, the main one being the Mac Plus version.) is available for Android, PC, Mac OS (versions 7.5.3-9.2.2 and all OS X versions), iOS (jail broken) and Linux and emulates a 68k Mac. You can also emulate a PowerPC Mac on your Mac or Linux/Windows PC through SheepShaver (runs Mac OS 7.5.2-9.0.4) and PearPC (runs Mac OS X 10.1-10.4 without sound). Good evening Frederiqster, Sorry this is coming two months later than it should have. I've been busy working on my old eMac and this 2008 Dell Vostro 1700 laptop that this hospital that a family member of mine works for gave away.
All you have to do is download ImgBurn and the process becomes fairly straightfoward from there, as ImgBurn's main screen has 6 labelled icons that can make CD/DVD images out of either a physical CD/DVD or from files and folders stored on a disk, burn the contents of a CD/DVD image to a CD/DVD or write folders/files stored on a disk directly to a CD/DVD. The functions of the other 2 icons are to Verify a Disk and something labeled 'Discovery'. I am beyond frustrated.
This is everything I have tried so far:imgmount 2 windows95.img -size 512,63,64,520 -t hdd -fs noneimgmount 3 RivenDisc1.iso -size 596,230,144 -t hdd -fs none-crashes when I bootimgmount 2 windows95.img -size 512,63,64,520 -t hdd -fs noneimgmount 3 RivenDisc1.iso -size 596,230,144 -t cdrom -fs none-'Must specify drive letter to mount image at.' Still NOTHING! What am I missing? I may have found my answer: the this time you cannot utilize the emulated CD-ROM while you are in the Windows 95 operating system. This is a result of currently incomplete IDE emulation.'
My problem is that the CD's for Riven are so huge, that I can't put them all on the 1 GB hard drive for Windows 95. I also can't find any answers on the maximum of how big I can make the hard drive.
I just stuck with 1 GB because of the tutorial. I need a total of about 4 GB to have all the Riven CD's run locally. I might give it a try and re-make my Windows 95 image. I figured it out!!I had to follow the same steps as outlined here to create an img file (instead of an iso) for the game: for example, I would type:imgmake rivendisc1.img -t hd -size 600 -nofsThe 600 is for 600 MB. The disc 1 for the game is 568, but I decided to round it to 600.
Here is an important part. After the image is made, it tells me (for the size):609 cylinders, 32 heads and 63 sectorsSo that translates into:512,sectors,heads,cylindersOR512,63,32,609After that, I need to change the.conf file to have at the very end:imgmount 0 622c.img -t floppy -fs noneimgmount 2 rivendisc1.img -size 512,63,32,609 -t hdd -fs noneThis mounts the boot disc and the newly creates image. I then continue in the instructions with fdisk to create a partition, then format. Now the disk is ready to be mounted and the game files transferred. The only difference with the instructions in the video is I have to temporarily change the.img to.vhd. Then I can add it using the Management tool. After I transfer the files, I then go to My Computer, right click on the mounted virtual drive, and click 'Eject.'
Then I can name the.vhd back to a.img.After that, I change the.conf file again and put in:imgmount 2 windows95.img -size 512,63,64,520 -t hdd -fs noneimgmount 3 rivendisc1.img -size 512,63,32,609 -t hdd -fs noneboot -l aIt boots into Windows 95 and it very nicely has a drive D (as a hdd hard drive, as opposed to the unsupported cdrom) with the game on it.
