Despite years and many patches, the game is still quite buggy. The Starter Pack fixes almost all of those issues and offers a number of optionals to improve the game's graphics. Here's a list of the bugs that are fixed by the mods that are included in the Starter Pack: Stalker SoC Known Bugs www.metacognix.com First off, install the game. This was a very helpful link for me. The mod scene isn't as complicated as Morrowind, but it's enough to sometimes put me off of the game. There's no authoritative central guide or repository anywhere! Since I'm doing a first run of SoC, I grabbed the Starter Pack 2015 from one of the links.
Should be building my new PC over the weekend, so I want to start getting some good games.Last time I gamed on PC was probably Half Life 1 and some counterstrike on the office LAN after work. So some yearsWas thinking of some of the following - would welcome comments to help me prioritise and also suggestions for other games too. Especially where there are sequels and if I can skip earlier games in the seriescrysis. Not a massive fan of fps but need to try thiscivilisation VRacing - Dirt 2? (will get shift 2 and maybe dirt 3 and already played shift on PS3)Mass Effect (can I jump into 2 or do them in order?)bioshock 1 & 2dead space 1 & 2edit: Batman AA(I'm lumping these all together as they'll probably be slow, one at a time titles, whereas I can dip in and out of the others)flight sim. Won't have a stick yet, just a 360 controller.
Last one I played was Su-27 flankeredit: Ordered Batman AA, Crysis, Mass Effect 1, Warhammer: Dawn of War II, Civ V, HL2/Ep1/Ep2, Just Cause 2Will wait for: Witcher 2; NFS Shift 2; dirt 3 (they seem to be coming out pretty soon and I've got plenty to be getting on with). As someone who just built a new PC and not really much of a PC gamer, let me strongly recommend Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 2. That title alone may scare you because it is so long and full of unfamiliar references, but it is a fantastic game.
I have never played any Warhammer games nor even any RTS games before, but this game has totally hooked me.First, it doesn't have any of the complex resource management usually associated with the genre. In fact, there is no resource management. You control small squads and it is more about positioning them and using their individual skills effectively. The game has very cool RPG elements. You level up your characters and equip them with new abilities, weapons, and armor in between missions. The best part is that you keep y our XP and your loot from a mission even if you lose, making it far less intimidating for new players.Game also looks great and has a very cool mix of cartoony medieval fantasy meets Halo's bright pastel world.
If you have Xbox Live, you can also chat with friends on the 360 and earn achievements while playing it on PC.I picked it up on Steam during the recent holiday sale in the THQ pack (which was an AWESOME deal for $50, loaded with great games). But you can find it pretty much anywhere for $20 or less now.I have Crysis, The Witcher, GTA IV and a number of others, but Dawn of War 2 is the first game to really grab me. The Orange Box and Left 4 Dead, maybe the rest of Valve. Some people prefer Civilization IV over V, I've only played IV but it is very, very good.Dirt 2 is also a good choice.Start with Mass Effect 1, there are many aspects in which it is better then Mass Effect 2 but also aspects in which it lacks, I still prefer it.Dead Space 1 is very good, and Dead Space 2 probably is too.And in my opinion, Crysis isn't a good shooter, a lot of people think it is, so you should probably still try it. I should skip Bioshock 2 though, it's more of the same.Have you played on consoles? Some titles you should play also:Mirrors EdgeBatman: Arkham AsylumAmnesia (If you love horror)The Witcher (Very good western rpg, you could also wait for the sequel)World of Goo (I love that game, fun puzzle indie game)And also look out for Steam sales.EDIT: Oh yeah, Minecraft, that game is great. PC game starter pack:Stuff by Valve, especially TF2.Stuff by Blizzard. After that, just browse Steam, D2D, and other download services and check out what's on sale or tickles your fancy. There is a ton of variety out there and you may find something that you wouldn't normally buy but end up really liking, like I did with King's Bounty.PS: If you are interested in a DOTA style game, try out League of Legends.
It's free to play and microtransaction based, and unlike other DOTA clones the community isn't absolutely wretched. I'll try to recommend games that demonstrate PC's strengthTeam Fortress 2STALKERCivilization 4, also try Fall From Heaven 2Crysis (not Warhead)Starcraft 2 and then either Company of Heroes/Dawn of War 2 (and of you like the Relic games try World in Conflict)Trine and VVVVVV (for the extremes of the indie scene)Torchlight (or Magicka from what I hear but I haven't played it)I have a tough time on which CRPG to recommend. From a gameplay perspective, The Witcher could be done on consoles. I didn't like Dragon Age enough to recommend it, and the Baldur's Gates are great but tough as nails.
Not a huge fan of fpses(?) but would probably play a few, single player focus, little time for onlinelike Racing games, RPGs I can love or hate. Used to like UFO etc, but really loved Demon Souls. Don't need a ton of them, just a few with good strong stories. I'm drawn to Fallout more from the setting more than anything else, so if its not a great game I'm fine to skip it.
Not into Warhammery/WoW type scenarios.I have a PS3 and Wii (looking forward to trying out Dolphin), so I'm probably looking for multiplatform stuff that I can transition to from PS3 (and standout titles I'm LTTP on, like Mass Effect, Bioshock etc), and then any exclusive gems there might be lying around - perhaps one or two suggestions for strategy/RPG/flight sim- and whats Steam like in Europe? Had an account for years - I still have Half life bought through that, but haven't used it in ages. How do prices compare to buying DVDs online? A lot of the older titles seem to only be about £10, even in high street store - ME1, Bioshock etc.How many of your games are download Vs DVD? I went off classic C&C type RTS and I don't particularly like resource management - just give me the right units for the job and i'll work with them.I can start to see a few regular recommendations. Some I'll grab immediately like Crysis/Dirt 2/Mass Effect 1/Dawn of War 2 and others I'll start a little backlog via steam. Not sure if I have orange box already. Might have - I'll check though. I remember playing through portal. Torchlight - Awesome streamlined Diablo 1 like game. Great art direction and style. Well worth checking out.Farcry 2 - Open world game set in Africa.
Once you get pulled in it's becomes addictive.Dragon Age Origins - Awesome RPG in the ilk of Balders Gate.Company of Heroes - WW2 themed RTS, with a little resource management, but not Starcraft levels of management.Fallout 3 - If you haven't played it already.AudioSurf - Generates levels from your music collection. It's like Tetris/IDK wtf to call it. Not a huge fan of fpses(?) but would probably play a few, single player focus, little time for onlinelike Racing games, RPGs I can love or hate.
